The Bear Casually Licked Up The Spit. By: Morgan Then the Spirit bear was on top of me again! Scratching at my chest, slashing flesh open like he was racking leaves. A boy getting attacked by a mythical creature. I just had to pick up this book and start reading it. Cole has done many terrible things for years. He challenges anyone to a fight if they do something he didn’t like. He also steals anything he can get his hands on. Then one day he got told on by Peter Driscal, a ninth grader. Cole got revenge and beat Peter senseless. Now he has to choose between jail and Native American Circle Justice. Of course Cole stays away from jail and chooses Circle Justice. He has to spend one whole year on a remote Alaskan island. When he first gets there he tries to kill a big, white, furry bear called the Spirit bear, but the Spirit Bear nearly kills him! Now no one can save Cole…except himself. Now that the bear almost put him to death, he has to figure out a way to survive. When it rained he used the precious water to keep him alive. He ate worms, bugs, a mouse, and even his own puke to fight his hunger. Then Cole thinks. This is the first time he actually cared about life and his parole officer said he would be back in a couple of days. Will he get there in time to help Cole? Or will he come and find Cole dead? The main character is Cole Mathews, a teenager at Minneapolis Central High, turns from devil bad to good. Peter Driscal, a ninth grader that goes to the same school as Cole, is terrified of Cole after what he did to him. Then there’s Garvey, Cole's parole officer, tries as hard as he can to change Cole. Edwin, a Native American Tlingit, teaches Cole how to calm his anger. Cole’s mom and dad drink like there’s no tomorrow. Cole’s dad beats him for no reason and his mom just sits like a bump on a log and watches her only son suffer. The setting is a remote Alaskan island where Cole is banished to. It is also a home to a mythical creature called the Spirit Bear. It is completely surrounded by below freezing waters. It is full of trees, rocky hills, streams, and ponds. I loved Touching Spirit Bear! Once you get to reading it you can’t take your nose out of it. During Cole’s banishment he goes through an exciting adventure that puts you on your toes! It has fantastic details that tell you every splitting second what Cole went through. Like how he turned from bad to good and how he fought to survive after the savage attack he encountered. If you like adventerous books and can handle kids getting hurt at some point then this would be the book for you! I hope that you have a chance to read this marvelous book!
